For years now, organizations have enjoyed using Business Portal. The ability to use a Web Browser to enter payroll information and time sheets while managing and exporting reports has provided an additional value add to many organizations. This is particularly the case, in a world where we must communicate externally, with our off-site employees and outside vendors. The companies utilizing Business Portal with Dynamics GP must be asking themselves and their VAR’s, “so what do I do now?”
For those of you using Dynamics GP 2013, and GP 2013 R2, Business Portal is supported. For those organizations, actively utilizing Business Portal and ready to upgrade to GP 2015. Guess what? There is bad news and good news!
Let’s start with the not so great news. Business Portal functionality of Order Management, Personal Data Keeper, eService and eReturns will no longer be available with GP 2015. These once touted capabilities will be gone.
Now for the Good news! Microsoft’s release of GP 2015 will still make available important functionality including:
- Time and Attendance
- Employee Pay
- Employee Profile
- Skills and Training
- Requisition Management
- Workflow Capabilities
Dynamics GP Payroll and HR users are most certainly smiling at this very moment!
Change for most of us, is difficult at best. However, replacing Business Portal and removing the additional level of development required within Sharepoint, brings positive change for the end user. This means more features and functionality will be integrated directly into Dynamics GP, thus allowing Microsoft to confirm that these features will stay current with the entire Microsoft Platform as it grows and changes. By replacing Sharepoint, end-users will have access to robust data sharing, utilizing the new Web Client in a read-only format, ensuring data reliability.
Although losing something we once relied on may provide each of us with a bit of anxiety and uncertainty, at least in regards to Business Portal, Microsoft appears to have created a path that makes sense for some important functionality.
